Syllabus may be obtained from Institute’s website – Click Here

There is no limit; students can register for multiple exams in an exam session provided they do not fall on same date and time.

Actuarial exams are conducted twice a year – usually May and November. Examination dates for the upcoming exams are posted on the Institute website – Click Here for further details.

Institute has taken the initiative of conducting home based online Actuarial exams May 2024 onwards.

No, there is no negative marking.

Beginning November 2025 examinations, the assessments for CB1, CB2, CB3, CS1A, CS2A, CM1A, and CM2A will consist of both Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and descriptive (non-MCQ) components. The MCQ section will account for a minimum of 20% and a maximum of 30% of the total marks, while the remaining marks will be allocated to the descriptive/subjective section.

Institute has a robust mechanism for coaching and counselling our students. Click Here to view the details related to coaching.

While there is no prescribed order, it is seen that starting the actuarial exams with Core principles works well in easing the students’ understanding and logical follow through with the exam rigour.  A general thumb rule based on trends indicates that students follow a numerical order.  It may be worth noting that:

CB1 – Business Finance assumes knowledge of CM1
CS2 – Actuarial Statistics assumes knowledge of CS1
CM2 –  Economic Modelling assumes knowledge of CS1, CS2, CM1 and CB2.

CB3- Business Management has no formal prerequisites, but taking it early can support better understanding of the business and professional context of actuarial work

You may find it convenient to leverage your college education while selecting the subjects appropriately, Typically preferred choices based on education background have been:

Management: CB3

Mathematics/Engineering: CM1
Statistics: CS1 and CS2
Economic: CB2
Accounts / Commerce: CB1

Whilst planning your exams, kindly note that there is no compulsory order of studying Core principle subjects.

The numbering of the Core principle subjects represents an ordering that would be appropriate for anyone working in life insurance or pensions. Anyone working in general insurance may prefer to take CS2 at any stage after studying CM1 while someone working in investment may prefer to take CB2 and CM2 before CS2 and CM1. CB3 can be taken at any point and is especially useful early on, as it supports provide business-related solutions when working on later subjects and help in the development of their practical work-based skills.

This is a highly subjective question and solely depends on the student’s commitment. Nevertheless, the ball park hours of intensive study as reported by successful students in the past are as highlighted:-

  • Core Principle subjects (CS1 & 2, CM1 & 2, CB1 & 2):Between 125 and 150 hours and student’s past educational background in the subject.
  • Business Management (CB3) At least 20 hours
  • Actuarial Practice (CP1) 400 hours
  • Model Practice (CP2) 50 hours
  • Communication Practice (CP3) 50 hours
  • Specialist Principle subjects (SP) 200 hours
  • Specialist Applications subjects (SA) 300 hours

In CP2/CP3, it is assumed that the students have prior knowledge of CS, CM and CB subjects. Any additional information not part of assumed knowledge of prior subjects will be provided within the question paper itself, if relevant and applicable.

There is no minimum eligibility for CP1. However, students may find it logically convenient to clear all Core Principle subjects prior to attempting CP1.

There are no pre-requisites of clearing other papers in order to register for CP2 & CP3.

There is no fixed duration to complete the course as you are at liberty to take the examinations at a pace that suits your circumstances. 13 subjects are prescribed to be cleared before one is awarded the Fellowship and calls for continued and sustained efforts to complete the course. Additionally, you need a minimum of three years’ relevant work experience to qualify as a Fellow and must have successfully attended the India Fellowship Seminar (IFS), which must be valid at the time of admission as a Fellow (Validity – to be admitted as FIAI within 24 Months – counted from the month immediately succeeding the month of successful attending IFS Seminar). Keeping the above factors in mind, the typical timeframe for qualification in recent years has been 5-8 years.

To qualify, there is a minimum work experience requirement of three years in an Actuarial field. Almost all reputable actuarial employers have attractive study programs to support your development and growth. These include time off work to study and take the examinations, mentoring by senior colleagues as well as financial support. Being an actuary is a professional qualification and you are expected to gain relevant work experience alongside studies. Typically, if you have passed two to four core technical papers, it is advisable to actively begin researching your preferred career options and secure an appropriate job.

A list of potential employers is available on the Institute’s website – Actuarial Employers in India

Career opportunities are regularly advertised in the Actuary India magazine as well posted on the Institute’s website from time to time.

Many reputable employers including consultancies and insurance companies recruit entry level actuarial students – typically entry level positions may be open to University graduates with no or very few actuarial exams passes.

A placement cell is functioning within the Institute to provide all guidance and support to its members on their first job by facilitating job opportunities with various actuarial employers. The cell also helps students to understand their skill and training requirements based on such opportunities with Companies. The member can register with the Placement cell and avail all services related to employment/ change of employment.

The last successfully uploaded answer script in exam platform shall be considered for evaluation.

In case of any technical issues during this 15-minute upload period that prevent you from uploading your script, please immediately contact the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) at 91 22 62433334/36/78/49 . Do not take support of any other member including friends or family in case you are struggling to upload the answer script or any other technical issue.

3. Dual Monitoring

If you receive an incoming call (cellular voice call or VoIP call via apps like WhatsApp or Teams) but do not answer it, mobile proctoring will continue running normally without interruption to the live proctoring video feed.

To avoid interruptions without enabling airplane mode, use your phone’s Do Not Disturb (DND) or Focus mode. Configure it to silence all calls, messages, and app notifications while keeping Wi-Fi and mobile data active for the browser1. Disable vibration and haptic feedback in your phone’s sound settings to prevent physical movement. Additionally, mute or disable call notifications for apps like WhatsApp, Teams, or Skype in their notification settings.

Vibration can cause slight movement if the phone is placed on an unstable or slippery surface. To prevent this, place your phone on a stable mount such as a tripod, clamp, or sturdy stand on a flat, non-slip surface. Disable vibration and haptic feedback in your phone’s settings.

If an incoming call is not answered, the browser will continue recording without any interruption, and the live proctoring session will run normally.

If the candidate needs to answer an incoming call, especially in an emergency, they should ask for permission from the proctor immediately via chat.

Running the browser continuously for 1.5 to 3 hours will not cause meaningful immediate damage to a modern smartphone battery. Expect normal battery drain (15-20% drainage per hour) and some warmth due to continuous camera and network use. To minimize battery stress, start the exam with a fully charged phone, reduce screen brightness, remove thick protective cases to improve cooling.

Fully charge your smartphone immediately before the exam. Use a high-capacity power bank with stable output. Place the power bank and charging cable so they do not tug or move the phone, using longer cables if necessary. Prefer wired charging over wireless for more stable power delivery.

Use a quality multi-outlet extension or surge protector to expand available sockets. Consider a multi-port USB/PD wall charger capable of powering multiple devices simultaneously. Use a high-capacity power bank as a backup power source.

Position the phone in landscape orientation for broader coverage. Place the device 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) away, slightly above eye level (about 1.2 to 1.5 meters), tilted downward 10 to 30 degrees. Frame the shot to include your full face, shoulders, the top of your desk, both hands while working, and the chair area behind you. Use a stable tripod, clamp, or sturdy stand on a flat, non-slip surface. Ensure good, even front lighting to avoid shadows or glare. Clean the camera lens before starting and disable any beauty filters or effects.

A reference image will be displayed to the candidate once the candidate pairs their mobile/tab according to which the candidate can position their device.

–     Charge your phone and connect it to a stable Wi Fi network. Ensure the front camera is clean and accessible; the rear camera is not permitted for proctoring.

–    On your computer, proceed to the “Pair mobile device” step in the exam flow — a QR code or pairing code will appear on the test window.

–    Open your phone’s QR scanner. Scan the QR code displayed on the computer screen. Scanning will open a browser page on the phone.

–   In the browser/app prompt, grant the required permissions. Allow access to the front camera (and microphone if the flow requests it). Do not grant access to the rear camera — use the front camera only.

–     Return to the exam page on your computer and confirm the mobile device is paired by clicking the confirmation button or following the on-screen instruction.

–    If pairing fails, check that camera permissions are enabled in phone settings, that the phone is online, and that battery optimization/background restrictions aren’t blocking the app/browser. Retry scanning the QR shown on the test page.

The mobile device’s video stream typically requires between 0.3 to 1.5 Mbps upload bandwidth depending on video quality settings. Combined with the laptop’s exam session, it is recommended to have at least 3 to 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download speeds for stable performance. Close unnecessary applications on both devices to reduce CPU and memory load. Avoid other bandwidth-heavy activities on your network during the exam.

Notify the proctor using the exam chat. Reposition and stabilize the phone to the original framing. Check and reconnect Wi-Fi on the phone if needed. Follow any reconnect prompts on the exam page, including rescanning the QR code. If issues persist, reboot the phone or use an alternate device. Document the interruption time and cause for the proctor.

Yes, airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled is generally effective because it blocks cellular voice calls and SMS, preventing interruptions from those sources. However, Wi-Fi calls and notifications from apps like WhatsApp, Teams, or Skype will still be received and can cause interruptions or overlays. To minimize disruptions, use Do Not Disturb mode and mute notifications for these apps. Ensure Wi-Fi is connected and stable before starting the exam.

Dual proctoring with Mettl only works via the default Web Browser (Using QR Scan) on a phone or tablet. External webcams or other devices are not allowed. Ensure the device is properly paired and positioned as per instructions.

For reliable and smooth proctoring, a recommended speed is 3 to 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. If both the laptop and mobile device are streaming video simultaneously, higher bandwidth is advisable. Also ensure low latency and minimal packet loss for best performance.
